Who is Ted Ligety?
Born Aug. 31, 1984 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He started skiing at age 2, and said that his parents used the mountain as a babysitter because they would drop him off in the morning, let him ski all day, and then pick up in the evening after work. He was inspired watching Tommy Moe win two medals at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics.
Ligety was given the nickname “Ted Shred” by a ski coach in Park City when he was about 10 years old. He is also nicknamed “Mr. GS” because of his success in giant slalom.
Ligety was the youngest member of the 2006 U.S. Olympic men’s Alpine team at the age of 21. He claimed the combined title, and was the only U.S. man to win a gold medal in Torino.
He arrived at the 2010 Winter Olympics ranked No. 1 in giant slalom, but finished ninth. He described his experience in Vancouver as “a good learning experience for me.”
Ligety returned to the podium at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, winning gold in giant slalom. He became the first male Olympic giant slalom champion from the United States.
He has also excelled at Worlds, earning five career gold medals. In 2013, he became the first man to win at least three gold medals at the same world championships since 1968. “Mr. GS” also claimed three consecutive giant slalom titles at the biennial competition from 2011-2015.
Ligety won a World Cup race for the first time in South Korea in 2006. He is hoping to achieve similar success when he returns to the country for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Ligety is the only U.S. Alpine ski racer with two Olympic gold medals.
After the 2006 Winter Olympics, Ligety co-founded Shred, a ski apparel company. He produces everything goggles to helmets to sunglasses. He now sponsors many of his biggest rivals.
Ted Ligety on his goals in PyeongChang: “To win gold in three events would be awesome. But my main goal will be to defend my gold medal in GS.”
