Who is... Tom Daley

Tom Daley is the 2012 London Olympic bronze medalist in the individual 10m platform.

Tom Daley is the 2012 London Olympic bronze medalist in the individual 10m platform. He is making his third Olympic appearance in Rio.

Diving beginnings

Daley, the eldest of three boys, was a regional judo champion before finding diving.

Major competitions/ medals

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when he was 14 years old, Daley placed seventh in the individual platform and finished eighth in the synchronized platform with then-partner Blake Aldridge.

At the 2012 London Olympics, Daley earned a bronze medal individually and finished just outside the podium in fourth place with then-partner Peter Wakefield.

Following London, Daley finished in sixth place in the individual platform at the 2013 World Championships.

At the most recent World Championships in 2015, Daley won another individual bronze medal. He won gold in the inaugural mixed synchronized event (where one male and one female dive together) with partner Rebecca Gallantree.

His first time diving with synchronized diving partner Dan Goodfellow was in early 2016 at a meet where a power outage delayed the competition. The other duos pulled out and Daley and Goodfellow stood alone on the podium.

Breakout moment

Daley became Britain's youngest world champion across any sport when he won gold at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Italy, when he was 15 years old.

Signature

Daley calls his signature dive, which no one has ever completed on the platform in the Olympics before, a "firework dive" - a piked forward 3 1/2 somersault with 1 twist. He debuted the dive in early 2015 out of necessity. He was previously doing a backward 2 1/2 somersault with 2 1/2 twists, which became known as the "demon dive," and it haunted him. Instead, he remedied his dive list with the new skill, which he says has boosted his overall confidence.

Top quotes

"He will be a great diver if he doesn't grow any more. He has a great sense for the water and a great feeling while turning over in the air." - Chinese rival Qiu Bo said after Daley grew seven inches between the 2008 and 2012 Games

Olympic experience

The 2016 Rio Games are Daley's third Olympic appearance. He competed in the 2008 Beijing Games, where he finished seventh and eighth in the individual and synchronized events, respectively, and the 2012 London Olympics, where he earned a bronze medal and a fourth place finish in the same respective events.

Outside the pool

Plans to watch gymnastics and trampoline in Rio, as he understands the mechanics - and they're fun, too!

He announced his engagement to Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black in October 2015. Earlier, in December 2013, he made a YouTube video addressing rumors about his sexuality.
