Known as "Iceland Air," the 29-year-old led the surprising gold medal finalists with seven goals in their semifinal against Spain.
The star of the 1976 Games was a 14-year-old Romanian gymnast named Nadia Comaneci. Her compulsory exercise on the uneven bars was flawless, and only a technical oversight threw some doubt into the perfection. The Forum scoreboard, not designed to show scores higher than 9.99, initially flashed 1.00. What the 1.00 score meant was a 10.00, the first perfect mark ever in Olympic competition.
By the time it was over, Comaneci had scored seven perfect 10s, had won three golds, including the individual all-around title, a silver and a bronze, and had ensured the prominence of women's gymnastics in the Olympics and her place in our heart of many the world over.
