No U.S. women has won a speed skating medal since '02, but the 1000m could change that. Heather Richardson sits in first in the overall World Cup standings for the distance after winning three of four races this season. The other women to win a race was American Brittany Bowe, who set a world record in the process.

The favorite in the women's 1500m is 2010 gold medalist Ireen Wuest of the Netherlands. Wuest is in first place in the overall World Cup standings for the distance, with American Brittany Bowe right behind her. Wuest is a multiple medal contender, but her best distance is the 1500m.
