A total of 12 men's teams will compete in the Olympic volleyball tournament. China earned its bid as the host nation. Brazil, Russia and Bulgaria each earned their Olympic berths after finishing a respective 1-2-3 at the 2007 World Cup. Venezuela will make its Olympic debut in men's and women's volleyball, while Japan qualified for the Olympics in men's volleyball for the first time since 1992. Volleyball matches are best-of-five sets. In the first four sets, the first team to 25 with a two-point lead wins. Fifth sets are played to 15 with a lead of two.
