Somewhat of a late bloomer, Abbott earned his first big international medal at Four Continents in 2007 at the age of 21. The Aspen native was third in Colorado Springs behind fellow American Evan Lysacek and Jeffrey Buttle of Canada.

Skate Canada, 2009
By late 2009, Abbott had solidified himself as an Olympic contender by winning the U.S. Championships earlier that year. He won gold at Skate Canada, his second of three career Grand Prix gold medals.
