Born in Chicago, Illinois, Shani Davis' love of skating began when he was just 2 1/2 years old. His mother later enrolled him at the Evanston Speed Skating Club in Evanston, Illinois and he now trains at the Petit National Ice Center in Milwaukee. Davis was the first African American to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Short Track Speedskating team and the first African American athlete to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual sport. Davis has set eight world records, three of which still stand. He loves the Chicago White Sox and wore his team cap at the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino.
