Team USA announces first ever women's ski jumping team
Jan 23, 5:45pm EST
The 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia are fast approaching and excitement for Team USA is building. For the first time, women's ski jumping will be contested at the Olympic level.
The decade-long fight for women's ski jumping to be included in the Winter Olympics is over -- and it was a fight that could not have been won without support from several angles.
"It's something we've been fighting for a very, very long time, but the support around us ... we've had families, team sponsors, there has been a huge effort to get women to be able to ski jump in the Olympics, so this is just a bit milestone, not just for us athletes, but for everyone involved," said Jessica Jerome, who earned her spot on the team by winning the Olympic Trials.
Ski jumper Lindsey Van, not to be confused with Lindsey Vonn, was named to the team with one other, Sarah Hendrickson, Wednesday.

"There's women from 18 different countries that will be competing," explained Van. "The U.S. women have been the best team in the world the last two years, so we're hoping to go on that and get somebody on the podium, if not all three of us. It would be really awesome."
The first-time Olympians expressed a little concern about their safety as they prepare for their travels, but they say they trust athletes will be kept safe.
"With all the news surrounding this, it's maybe a little worrisome, but I have total faith in the U.S. Olympic Committee and all the entities including the Russian government, who are working so diligently to ensure the safety of the athletes and spectators," said Jerome.
"I hope everybody is going there for the same reason we are and that's to compete in sport and I hope those same values are upheld for everybody that is attending," added Van.
Three women have been named to the U.S. women's ski jumping team so far, and depending on how many athletes are named from other countries, a fourth jumper could be added.
Jessica Jerome, Lindsey Van, and Sarah Hendrickson are all from Park City, Utah.
