Short track speed skater Kimberly Derrick of Caledonia competed in her first Olympic Games in Italy. The night before her championship skate, her grandfather died and she failed to medal. If she wins a medal in Vancouver, it will be the U.S. team's first Olympic women's short track speed skating medal since 1994. Derrick is equally adept at both ice skating and inline skating. An elementary education major at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, she hopes to one day become a teacher. When she's not training, Derrick enjoys scary movies, music, computers, puzzles and crafts.
