Anna Gasser tops Jamie Anderson in slopestyle qualifying
It looks American Jamie Anderson's quest for the first-ever Olympic gold medal in women's slopestyle won't come easy.
Austrian Anna Gasser set the highest mark of the day in qualifying, scoring a 95.50 on her first run and topping Anderson, the presumptive gold medal favorite. Anderson still managed to lock up her place in the final, finishing second in her heat behind Gasser with a 93.50 on her first run. With a spot in the final already sewn up, Anderson opted to bypass her second run.
Australia’s Torah Bright, the 2010 gold medalist in halfpipe, was also among the riders to advance straight into the final. She successfully qualified for three separate disciplines in Sochi – slopestyle, halfpipe and snowboard cross – and while she started the week a bit under the radar in slopestyle, she established herself as a potential medal contender with today’s effort.

Other riders advancing straight to the final include Switzerland’s Isabel Derungs - who topped Bright in the first heat – as well as Canada’s Spencer O’Brien, Finland’s Enni Rukajarvi, Switzerland’s Elena Koenz and American Karly Shorr.
Hope is not lost for the rest of the field though. Sunday’s semifinal will serve as a last chance qualifier for all who didn’t make the cut, as the top four from that round will join these eight ladies in the final later that day.
Among the riders in the semifinal will be a pair of Americans – Jessika Jenson and Ty Walker. Walker is dealing with multiple injuries sustained in practice this week and opted to take a mellow run though the course - bypassing obstacles, but getting a score in the books required in order for her to compete in the semifinal. She’ll now have an extra three days to heal up and throw down the run she wants.
Norway’s Silje Norendal, who defeated Anderson at X Games just two weeks ago, will join them in the semifinal after falling on both of her runs.
