One of the fastest-rising speedskaters in long track, Milwaukee resident Trevor Marsicano is no stranger to overcoming obstacles. He suffered a life-threatening leg injury in a 2004 short track race. Another competitor slipped toward Marsicano, and one of the competitor's skates sliced Marsicano's leg to the bone. The injury, which caused him to lose half the blood in his body, set Marsicano back a year and left him with a scar the size of a skater's blade.

He gave up short track skating to focus on the long track and hasn't looked back since. In 2009, he became the first American to win four medals at a World Single Distance Championships (gold, silver, 2 bronze). He broke the World Record in the 1000m in March, becoming the first skater under 1:07, 20 minutes before Shani Davis lowered the mark even further.
