Born June 15, 1981 in Siler City, N.C., to George and Elizabeth Bailey, Lowell Bailey lived in the south for four years before moving to Old Forge, N.Y. In 1991 the family moved again to Lake Placid, N.Y., where Bailey, at age 11, began competing in the Bill Koch League for cross-country skiers. Bailey directed his attention to being a biathlete full time after taking a break to attend the University of Vermont, where he studied political science and environmental studies and skied on the collegiate level. Bailey says "the best day of his life" was when he qualified for the 2006 Winter Olympic Biathlon Team and fulfilled his childhood dreams to compete at the Torino world stage. When he's not competing Bailey plays guitar and mandolin and often performs bluegrass music for audiences.
