Alex Shibutani and his younger sister Maia have been long-time fixtures on the ice dance podium in the United States. They started off individually as singles skaters, but officially became a duo in 2004. Their first year on the senior circuit, in 2011, they won silver medals at nationals and followed it up with a bronze medal at the world championships. They continued to win national medals, and added the 2014 Olympics to their resume, where they finished ninth.

The ice dance team claimed their first national title in 2016 and won gold at the Four Continents Championships that year. They also made a return to the world podium, claiming silver in Boston, Alex’s birthplace. In the pre-Olympic season, they defended their national title, picked up a silver at the Four Continents, and again landed on the 2017 World Championships podium, this time with a bronze.

The Shibutanis began their Olympic season at their Grand Prix assignment in Russia, where they won a gold medal. Then, they competed on home ice at Skate America, winning again. They qualified for the Grand Prix Final, where they captured a bronze medal and were the best of three U.S. dance teams in the field. At Nationals, they earned a silver medal and a place on the PyeongChang Olympic team.

The Shibutani siblings, or the “Shib Sibs,” are known for their unique style, which include programs set to a Michael Jackson medley or Coldplay songs. They’ve been coached by Michigan-based Marina Zoueva for the past decade; Zoueva coached Canadian ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir to gold at the 2010 Olympics and Team USA’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White to ice dance gold in 2014.
