Joey Mantia made his Olympic debut at the 2014 Sochi Games just a year after racing in his first World Cup event. A world champion inline skater, Mantia started his skating career at 9 years old at the same roller rink as Olympic teammate Brittany Bowe and 2010 Olympic figure skater Caydee Denney. Mantia won 28 world titles as an inline skater, but switched to speed skating in 2010 in hopes of making an Olympic team. His dream came true in Sochi, but he wasn't satisfied with his results—15th in the 1000m, 22nd in the 1500m and 7th in the team pursuit. Mantia said that lack of confidence and mental preparation was to blame for his podium misses in 2014, but it’ll be a different story in PyeongChang. Mantia competed at the last three world single distance championships, and won his first world medal in 2017: a gold in the mass start, an event that will be making its Olympic debut in 2018. Mantia will be the reigning world champion and a medal favorite in the mass start, where up to 24 skaters begin together from the same start line instead of racing in pairs like in other individual speed skating races.
