Kiley McKinnon can credit her start in aerials to another prominent American athlete — Mac Bohonnon.

An elementary school classmate of McKinnon's, Bohonnon had moved to Lake Placid to train with the U.S. developmental team and decided to recruit McKinnon. Though she had never done aerials before, McKinnon had a background in gymnastics and decided to give it a go.

But McKinnon had her detractors. She was described as being "too tall" for the sport, leading some to tell her that she could never be successful in aerials. The thin, lanky frame she had when she first started even earned her a nickname: "Beanstalk."

It was only a matter of time until she proved the naysayers wrong. Nearly three years after her World Cup debut, McKinnon earned the first podium result of her career in December 2014. That kickstarted her best season to date, with McKinnon winning a silver medal at the 2015 World Championships and taking home the Crystal Globe as the overall winner of the FIS World Cup series. She followed that up with two more top-ten seasons in 2016 and 2017.
