The 2024 Paris Olympic badminton draw is out. There will be five badminton events across the tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics: singles (women's/men's) and doubles (women's/men's/mixed).
Both individual and team competition matches use a best-of-three format. One loss in the Olympic tournament format will result in elimination from the tournament, save for in the semifinals when the two losers will advance to the bronze-medal final.
A game is won when a player reaches 21 points with a two-point advantage. In the event of a 20-20 tie, the players keep playing until one gets a two-point advantage. In the event of a 29-29 tie, the winner of the next point wins the match.
In both the men's and women's singles, the top finishers from Groups A, E, and P will receive byes to the quarterfinals.
The Olympic badminton tournament will take place between July 27 to August 5 at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.
Women's singles
Reigning women's gold medal champion Chen Yu Fei of China, seeded No. 2, starts her title defense campaign in Group P. She would need to top world No. 46 Mia Blichfeldt of Australia and world No. 37 Yvonne Li of Germany to win an automatic bye into the quarterfinals.
Tokyo Games silver medalist, Tai Tzu-Zhing, was drawn to Group E, will face a determined world No. 12 Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand in her draw. Tai's medal at the last Games was the first-ever Olympic silver in badminton for Chinese Taipei.
South Korea's An Se Young, seeded No. 1, will make her Olympic debut in Group A. The 22-year-old enters her first Olympic Games with a gold medal under her belt already after she won the 2023 World Championships.
American Beiwen Zhang, the No. 9 seed, was drawn to Group K. The most veteran member of the Team USA badminton roster, Zhang debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Games and advanced out of group play to the Round of 16 until she had to retire due to injury. She most recently won a gold medal in women’s singles at the 2024 Pan Am Individual Championships. She will be the only American woman in the women's singles event. In order to advance out of Group K, Zhang will have to finish above Australia's Tiffany Ho and Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam.
Women's doubles
One half of the reigning women’s doubles gold medal team from Indonesia, Apriyani Rahayu, returns to the Games without her former teammate, Greysia Polii, who retired from Badminton in 2022. Rahayu and current partner Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti will face the No. 1 seed Chinese team of Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan. Chen and Jia fell to the Indonesian team last year in the gold medal final, in a shocking upset.
The No. 2 seeded team from South Korea of Baek Ha na and Lee So hee lead the Group D pool, and are in fine form after capturing the title at the 2024 Indonesia Open.
Men's singles
In men's singles action, Denmark's Viktor Axelsen starts the defense of his gold medal title from the Tokyo Games in Group P. In order to punch his ticket for the quarterfinals, the No. 2 seed will have to finish above Ireland's Nhat Nguyen, Israel's Misha Zilberman, and Nepal's Prince Dahal, who are also in his pool. In Tokyo, Axelsen dethroned 2016 Olympic champion Chen Long in the men's singles division.
World No. 1 Shi Yu Qi of China’s Olympic debut will be in Group A. Shi should have an easy time navigating his pool, as he is set to compete against world No. 81 Giovanni Toti of Italy, and world No. 273, Soren Opti of Suriname.
Men's doubles
The men's doubles event will now have three pools of four pairs and one pool of five pairs, since the French shuttlers Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar qualified through a successful CAS hearing.
Americans Vinson Chiu from Newport Beach, California and Joshua Yuan from Foster City, California, fresh from their bronze medal win at the 2024 Pan Am Individual Championships, will face a tough pair of the No. 2 seed of Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark.
The top-seeded pair of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang lead the draw in Group A, and with four titles already under their belt this year, are favorites to take home the gold medal.
Mixed doubles
Reigning mixed doubles gold medalist Huang Dongping returns to the Games with a new partner, Fang Yan Zhe. The Chinese pair are seeded No. 2 and are top contenders in Group D. Tokyo silver medalists Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong are back at the Games this year and are seeded No. 1.
