Two more American karatekas are set to join Sakura Kokumai in Tokyo when karate makes its Olympic debut this summer.
Ariel Torres and Brian Irr (via continental representation) have both punched their ticket to Tokyo, giving the United States three athletes competing at the Olympic karate tournament.
Tom Scott, a two-time karate gold medalist at the Pan American Games, was unable to secure a qualification spot.
Torres, 23, is set to compete in the male kata discipline at the Olympics. The Hialeah, Florida native is the No. 10 ranked kata athlete in the world and previously won gold at the Pan American Karate Championships in 2019, as well as a silver medal at the 2019 Pan American Games.
Irr, nine years Torres' senior, will compete in the kumite +75kg division. Irr won gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in the +75kg weight class and previously won bronze at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
