Overview

Para biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, adapted for athletes with physical disabilities. The biathlon for athletes with physical disabilities was introduced in Innsbruck in 1988, followed in 1992 for athletes with visual disabilities.

Competitors use specialized equipment such as sit-skis or standing adaptive skis depending on their needs. The event typically involves a series of skiing laps interspersed with shooting bouts at targets from different positions, like prone or standing. The aim is to complete the course in the shortest time possible, with penalties added for missed targets. Para biathlon not only tests athletic prowess and precision but also requires exceptional skill in transitioning between skiing and shooting disciplines.
