Men's 1500m
The day begins with the men's 1500m quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals and finals later in the day.
Each of the six quarterfinal heats feature six skaters. The three fastest skaters in each heat and the three fastest 4th-placed athletes qualify for the semifinals.
After finishing just off the podium in the 1000m, Canada's William Dandjinou will look to earn his first individual Olympic medal Saturday. The two-time reigning Crystal Globe champion, who entered the 2026 Games as a podium favorite in all five of his events in Milan, won the last three of his four 1500m races on the World Tour circuit. He also owns the 2025 world title in the distance.
Host nation Italy has two medal contenders in the event: Thomas Nadalini and Pietro Sighel. Nadalini, 23, is the world No. 2 in the 1500m behind Dandjinou. Sighel, whose father is a five-time speed skating Olympian, ranks 6th. No Italian man has ever won individual Olympic short track gold, though Sighel and Nadalini aided in the country's gold-winning effort in the mixed relay Feb. 10.
Only two of the 2022 Olympic medalists will compete in the event. Beijing gold medalist Hwang Dae-Heon (South Korea) and silver medalist Steven DuBois (Canada) earned just one medal in the distance this season.
Rim Jong-Un, the 18-year-old South Korean skater who took silver in the men's 1000m, won the first 1500m of the 2025 World Tour season — which was also his first-ever World Tour race.
The 1500m is the only men's event in which the U.S. qualified the maximum three athletes. Brandon Kim, Clayton DeClemente, and Andrew Heo will race the distance.
Women's 1000m Qualifying
Canadian and reigning Crystal Globe champion Courtney Sarault began her Olympic debut with a bronze medal in her worst event, the 500m. She now moves on to her best event.
After skating to silver at 2025 Worlds, the 25 year old won three of four 1000m races on the 2025 World Tour, finishing 2nd in the fourth. Canada last won Olympic women's short track gold in 1998, when Annie Perault topped the 500m podium.
Reigning Olympic silver medalist Choi Min-Jeong is back to defend her place on the podium. She and South Korean teammate Kim Gil-Li claimed one 1000m silver apiece on the 2025 World Tour.
At the 2022 Games, Hanne Desmet took 1000m bronze to become the first Belgian to make an Olympic short track podium and the second Belgian woman to claim a Winter Olympic medal in any sport after pairs figure skater Micheline Lannoy in 1948. Desmet is now the reigning world champion.
The United States will also have three Americans in the 1000m: Corinne Stoddard, Kristen Santos-Griswold, and Julie Letai.
Stoddard ranked 2nd and 3rd in the 1000m on the past two World Tour circuits but has never skated to gold in the event. Santos-Griswold won the world title in the distance in 2024, the spring before she went on to claim the 2024-25 Crystal Globe trophy, but dealt with collarbone and back injuries this season that hindered her performance. Letai is making her second Olympic appearance following a two-year stretch marked by injuries and surgeries. None of the three advanced to the 500m finals. The U.S. women have not climbed an Olympic podium since 2010.
Women's 3000m Relay
The women's 3000m relay semifinals will feature two groups of four teams each. The two fastest teams in each semifinal qualify for the A Final, and the 3rd and 4th teams qualify for the B Final.
The final round will take place Wednesday, Feb. 18.
Canada and the Netherlands have topped the women's relay field over the last two seasons, claiming one gold and one bronze apiece on the world championship level. Each country boasts some of the sport's strongest skaters: Sarault and four-time Olympic medalist Kim Boutin lead the Canadian women, while the Dutch are powered by the world's fastest skater, Xandra Velzeboer. Velzeboer, the reigning 500m world champion, dominated the 500m tournament in Milan, skating to a new world record in her semifinal and claiming her first career gold in a dominant fashion. The Netherlands own the 2022 Olympic title and the 2025 World Tour season title.
The United States last earned a women's relay medal in 2010 (bronze), failed to qualify in 2014 and 2018, and didn't make the A Final in 2022. With Santos-Griswold and Stoddard, that could change in Milan. They, along with Letai and Eunice Lee, skated to silver in the event at 2024 Worlds. They also finished 2nd and 3rd at the final two World Tour stops this season.
In 2006, at the last Italian Games, short track legend Arianna Fontana earned her first-ever Olympic medal (bronze) in the women's relay. Twenty years and 12 more prizes later, Fontana is back on home soil and ready to end her final Olympic appearance with a bang. She's already skated to mixed relay gold and 500m silver in Milan, and with the help of overall world No. 8 Elisa Confortola, she'll look to earn the country's first gold in the event. Confortola, making her first Olympic appearance in Milan, was just 3 years old when Fontana made her own debut.
