Casey Dawson set his third national record in the 5000m en route to his first individual World Cup gold, and Jordan Stolz earned his second 1000m gold to open the first day of competition at the second World Cup in Calgary.
A week after he broke his own mark in his signature individual distance at the season opener in Salt Lake City, Dawson flew across the finish line in 6:01.84 minutes — also setting the track record for the third time that night.
Three pairs before Dawson raced, Canadian Ted-Jan Bloeman shaved over one second off the previous track best, held by Dutch skating legend Sven Kramer for 18 years almost to the day. The 39-year-old's time was 6:02.26.
Norway's Sander Eitrem then lowered the record to 6:01.86 — only two one-hundredths of a second slower than Dawson's time — just before Dawson took the ice.
Dawson's 1st-place finish improved three spots from last weekend, when he came in 4th. The 25-year-old finished 4th overall in the long distances last season.
Earlier in the evening, Stolz narrowly outpaced Dutch rival Jenning de Boo for his fourth gold medal of the 2025 World Cup season, pre-qualifying for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The two phenoms, paired together in their opening race of the second World Cup, were neck-and-neck through the entire distance, but Stolz turned up the heat down the stretch, crossing the finish line just one-tenth of a second ahead of de Boo.
The Netherlands' Joep Wennemars finished in third, recreating the 1000m podium from the 2025 World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships (though there, the order was reversed).
Given Stolz's 1000m bronze at worlds in March and his two World Cup golds in the distance this season, he technically has punched his ticket to Milan Cortina in February 2026. However, he still will be required to compete in the distance at U.S. Olympic Trials in January in order to remain eligible for the Olympic roster.
The United States' Cooper Mcleod missed his first podium of the season by just under two-tenths of a second, improving from his 9th-place finish in the 1000m at the season opener.
The Dutch also dominated the women's 1000m, sweeping the first four spots in the standings.
Less than a week after breaking the world record in the 500m, Femke Kok commanded her first race of the weekend in Calgary, posting a personal best 1:12.36 for her third gold of the season. Isabel Grevelt and Marrit Fledderus rounded out the podium, and Jutta Leerdam finished 4th. Leerdam won the race in Salt Lake City.
American Brittany Bowe, who has held the world record in the distance since 2019, came in 5th for the second World Cup in a row.
Like Dawson, Greta Myers also set a new national record, hers in the women's 3000m, for the second weekend in a row, posting a time of 4:00.70 in the Group B race.
Dutch skater Joy Beune won the distance's A Group for her second 3000m gold of the season.
American skaters may earn an Olympic berth in two ways at World Cup competitions:
- Earn a medal at the 2025 ISU World Single Distances Championships AND place in the top five at any two of the first four World Cups in the same distance
- Finish in the top three at any two of the first four World Cups in the same distance
However, Stolz and any other skaters who pre-qualify through the fourth World Cup stop will be required to compete in the same distance at Olympic Trials in January in order to remain eligible for the U.S. Olympic roster.
Additionally, the number of quota spots each country will receive will not be released until Dec. 19.
U.S. Olympic Trials will take place Jan. 2-6, 2026. The speed skating competition in Milan Cortina begins Feb. 7.
World Cup No. 2 continues Saturday, Nov. 22, with the 500m and 1500m competitions.
