After two appearances as a discretionary sport, climbing is now a permanent part of the Olympic Games. At the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, the sport was referred to as "sport climbing." 

Climbing has three distinct disciplines — each with their own nuances — but the common thread is that each course features a variety of holds that athletes use to maneuver themselves from the start to finish. For the first time, each discipline will have its own medal event at the Los Angeles Games.

There will be a total of six medal events for climbing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This will be the first time that each of the sport's three individual disciplines will be contested as separate events after the last two Olympics featured combined events for some, or all, of the disciplines.

Climbing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin on July 24, 2028, and conclude on July 29. The scheduled start and end dates for each event are as follows:

• Men's Speed: July 24-26
• Women's Speed: July 24-26
• Men's Boulder: July 24-27
• Women's Boulder: July 25-28
• Men's Lead: July 25-28
• Women's Lead: July 26-29

A temporary outdoor venue known as the Long Beach Climbing Theater will be constructed in the parking lot of the Long Beach Convention Center to host climbing competitions.
