And the Dutch takeover continues.
Four days after she roared to gold in the 500m, Xandra Velzeboer climbed to the top of the podium in the 1000m Monday, claiming her second career Olympic gold.
🥇 Xandra Velzeboer (Netherlands)
🥈 Courtney Sarault (Canada)
🥉 Kim Gil-Li (South Korea)
Velzeboer, the reigning 500m world champion, snapped her own world record (41.399 seconds) in the 500m semifinals and claimed a decisive win in the final race, becoming the first Dutch woman to win the event and denying Italian legend Arianna Fontana a three-peat.
The 24-year-old won four straight 500m races on the international level in 2025 before Canadian Courtney Sarault beat her to the finish line at the final stop on the 2025 World Tour. Sarault, who earned her first Crystal Globe trophy this season, finished 2nd behind Velzeboer in Monday's 1000m.
The Dutch, who have traditionally dominated the world of long track speed skating, have also owned the golden position in every individual men's final contested so far in Milan. Jens van 't Wout claimed gold in both the men's 1000m and 1500m, becoming the Netherlands' first skater to claim gold in any men's short track event on the Olympic level. They lead the total medal count with four, ahead of Canada's three.
The country did not own an Olympic short track medal until Suzanne Schulting's historic performance at the 2018 Games. Their four golds in Milan are more than they had won in any of their previous Olympic appearances combined (3).
Kim Gil-Li continued South Korea's legacy of short track greatness with a bronze medal in the event — her first Olympic prize. Ahead of the 2026 Olympics, South Korean skaters claimed a world-leading 53 medals (26 gold) in 65 contested Olympic events. The women have earned at least one 1000m medal at every Olympics except for the 2018 edition.
Italy's Arianna Fontana, the most decorated short track Olympian of all time, finished just off the podium in 4th. The 35 year old, who plans to retire after her sixth and final Games, powered the country to gold in the mixed relay and claimed a 13th-career Olympic medal with 500m silver before she competed in the 1000m.
Kristen Santos-Griswold, the only U.S. skater to make the quarterfinals, finished 3rd in her heat and did not advance.
Men's 500m heats
Two-time reigning Crystal Globe champion William Dandjinou (Canada), overall world No. 2 Pietro Sighel (Italy), reigning Olympic champion Liu Shaoang (China), Beijing bronze medalist Steven Dubois (Canada), and Jens van 't Wout — the Dutch skater who won both the 1000m and 1500m — all won their heats to advance to the quarterfinals.
Both anxious for an individual medal after missing the podium in the two longer sprints, Dandjinou and Sighel survived turbulent races that saw each of the other three skaters in their respective heats go flying into the boards. Sighel crossed the finish line backwards.
Andrew Heo, who this season became the first American man to win an individual top-level short track race in 11 years, also crossed the finish line first in his heat. Teammate Brandon Kim bumped skates with an opponent during a pass, knocking himself and two other skaters out of the race.
The two fastest athletes in each heat and the four fastest 3rd-place skaters advanced to the quarterfinals.
Men's 5000m relay semis
Canada, Italy, South Korea, and the Netherlands advanced to the men's relay finals, which will close the Olympic short track tournament on Feb. 20.
The Canadian men have won four of the last seven Olympic relays, including the most recent one at the 2022 Beijing Games. With Dandjinou and Dubois leading the relay squad in Milan, they could very well take a fifth title.
Longtime short track juggernaut South Korea (silver) and Italy (bronze) rounded out the 2022 podium.
China, Hungary, Belgium, and Japan will compete in the B Final for world ranking purposes.
Still to come on short track
Short track continues in Milan Wednesday, Feb. 18, with finals in the men's 500m and the women's relay.
Competition then concludes with the women's 1500m and the men's relay Feb. 20.
