Despite receiving multiple scholarship offers from top football programs across the country, in his junior year of high school, Erriyon Knighton decided to focus on track and field, signing a professional contract at age 16 and foregoing any amateur eligibility he had left.

At age 17, Erriyon Knighton competed in his first Olympic Games in Tokyo, becoming the youngest U.S.-born man to compete in the sport since Jim Ryun in 1964.

However, Knighton is a two-time world medalist at the distance, earning bronze in 2022 and silver in 2023. His third-place finish in 2022 earned him the title of youngest sprinter medalist in world championship history. He was only 18.
He also won the 2023 U.S. Championships, clocking a time of 19.72-seconds to earn his first national title at 19 years old.

Later that summer, at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, he broke his own record thrice, first completing the race in 20.04 seconds, then improving to 19.88 seconds and finally settling on 19.84 seconds.
