Overview

Fencing is one of the oldest sports on the Olympic program, and was one of the original sports contested at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. In fencing, two athletes armed with swords go toe-to-toe on a long playing zone called the piste. There are three disciplines in fencing – foil, épée and sabre – and athletes must aim to hit specific parts of their opponents' body to secure a point.

In individual matches, the winner is the first fencer to reach 15 points, or the fencer in the lead when the clock hits zero. In team events, the first team to score 45 points wins or holds the lead when time expires wins.
