Overview

One of two sports set to make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles (along with squash), flag football is a non-contact variation of classic American football in which offensive players aim to advance up the field into their opponents' endzone through a series of plays. Players can "tackle" one another by removing one of two fabric "flags" attached to each side of the ball-carrier's waist.

U.S. soldiers stationed on military bases during World War II invented the sport as a pastime, altering the traditional game of football to lower the risk of injury.
