Runs 1 and 2 of the two-man bobsled competition are done and dusted.

Unsurprisingly, the three German sleds dominated the timesheet at Cortina Sliding Centre and now occupy the medal positions at the halfway point of the event.

RESULTS

Top-ranked World Cup pilot Johannes Lochner and his brakeman Georg Fleischhauer set the start record (4.78 seconds) and track record (54.68 seconds) out of the gate. Lochner is the defending Olympic silver medalist in both the two-man and four-man events and is in search of his first Olympic gold.

On Run 2, Lochner came closer to gold by laying down a monstrous 0.8-second gap to the next-fastest sled. He will enter Tuesday’s final runs with a very healthy buffer between him and his countrymen.

Defending Olympic gold medalist Francesco Friedrich had a bumpy first run as the No. 2-seeded sled, dropping a place to 3rd after losing almost half a second to the leaders. That opened the door for third German pilot Adam Ammour to grab 2nd, but Ammour and his brakeman Alexander Schaller encountered similar problems to Friedrich on their second run and sit 1.24 seconds out of gold medal position.

Ammour’s rough second run meant the United States’ Frank Del Duca and Joshua Williamson, who sit in 4th place, are only a tenth of a second out of bronze medal position.

The No. 11-seeded Romanian sled piloted by Mihai Cristian Tentea went 10th fastest on Run 1, but they proved to be an underdog story when they started 16th on Run 2 and watched five sleds try and fail to eclipse their time. They made up an incredible five places to sit 5th ahead of Tuesday.
