Since four-man bobsled made its Winter Olympics debut at Chamonix 1924, a German team has won a medal at all but seven Games.
On the final day of Olympic action, Germany closed the book on sliding sports at Milan Cortina 2026 the same way they started it: In utterly dominant fashion.
And on his last-ever Olympic run, it was Johannes Lochner and his crew — Thorsten Margis, Jorn Wenzel and Georg Fleischhauer — taking gold. Lochner thus completed his own sweep of the men’s bobsled events after winning the two-man with Fleischhauer on Tuesday.
Margis also became the first five-time gold medalist in bobsled history.
Francesco Friedrich added a second silver medal to his haul from these Games, bringing his career total to six Olympic medals.
It was an incredible final run for the Swiss sled piloted by Michael Vogt, which sat in 4th place through the first three runs. It took setting a time just six hundredths off Lochner’s final run to secure bronze and prevent Olympic rookie Adam Ammour from taking his second bronze of the Games.
The medal marked Switzerland’s first in bobsled since Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann won gold in two-man at Sochi 2014, and snapped a 20-year four-man medal drought.
Kris Horn piloted the leading American sled, finishing 11th in his Olympic debut and 2.37 seconds off the top pace.
Frank Del Duca and his crew were not far behind in 12th, just 0.12 seconds from their countrymen. It was a massive amount of time Del Duca made up after his sled started 27th, due to not competing in the final World Cup race before the Olympics. The finish was also Del Duca’s Olympic-best after he finished 13th in the event at Beijing 2022.
