What to know about luge at the 2026 Winter Olympics
At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, Team USA’s luge squad represents a blend of seasoned veterans and rising talent after a strong World Cup season and a competitive U.S. nomination process. Olympic luge medals are decided over four timed runs in singles and two in doubles, with top times often clustered within tenths of a second — and while Germany and Austria remain the global gold standards on the circuit, Americans have been among the consistent contenders. U.S. sliders also secured qualification in all four individual and doubles disciplines, locking in a place on the Olympic team relay.
In women’s singles, Summer Britcher (making her fourth Olympic team), Emily Fischnaller (formerly Sweeney), and Ashley Farquharson will represent the U.S., each bringing valuable experience from recent World Cup and world championship competition. Britcher enjoyed multiple strong finishes this season, including World Cup medals and contributing to the U.S. relay podium, while Farquharson posted competitive times that helped secure U.S. relay qualification. Jonny Gustafson and Matthew Greiner will skate for the U.S. in men’s singles, with Greiner earning his Olympic berth by edging out a veteran competitor late in the qualification series.
On the doubles front, U.S. teams Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa — who captured a World Cup gold this season — join Zack DiGregorio and Sean Hollander as Olympic nominees, giving Team USA two competitive duos that have challenged the sport’s traditional European strong pairs.
For the first time in Olympic history, women’s doubles luge will be contested, marking a major step toward gender parity in the sport. Team USA is represented in this inaugural event by Chevonne Forgan and Sophia Kirkby. Forgan and Kirkby gained success on the World Cup circuit and at international championships, where they are two-time world championship medalists and have posted multiple podium finishes this season, helping to establish the U.S. as one of the capable contenders in a field otherwise led by strong European pairs.
American sliders also will contest the team relay, where performances across singles and doubles are combined and where collective depth can translate into a podium opportunity.
