What to know about rhythmic gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Rhythmic gymnastics at the Paris Olympics will feature a combination of individual and group events, showcasing routines that blend elements of dance and the use of apparatuses such as ribbons, hoops, balls, and clubs. Athletes are judged on their artistry, execution and difficulty of their routines.

In Paris, the individual podium will be history-making no matter the outcome, with no Russian or Belarusian gymnasts in the field, and no clear favorite since Tokyo.

Rising German star Darja Varfolomeev was unstoppable at the 2023 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, pulling off a complete sweep of the event with five individual gold medals. Heading into her first Olympic Games, Varfolomeev is poised to be a real medal threat. Stiliana Nikolova of Bulgaria has the difficulty to challenge Varfolomeev and is the 2024 European all-around champion. Other contenders include Italy's Sofia Raffaeli, who won the world all-around title in 2022, and Boryana Kaleyn of Bulgaria who finished fifth in Tokyo but comes to Paris as the 2023 European all-around champion.

There won't be a U.S. team in Paris, but Tokyo Olympian Evita Griskenas will represent the United States once again as an individual. Griskenas punched her ticket to Paris at the 2023 Pan American Games, where she won a silver medal in the all-around.
