What to know about ski jumping at the 2026 Winter Olympics

At the 2022 Beijing Games, underdog Slovenia, led by the now retired Ursa Bogataj, led all countries in the ski jumping competition with three medals (2 gold, 1 silver). Two siblings are poised to continue that trend: 26-year-old Domen and 20-year-old Nika Prevc. Following a strong 2024-25 season in which they each snapped a world record, they lead this year’s men’s and women’s World Cup standings, respectively. In early January, Domen earned his first-ever Four Hills title (the most prestigious one a man jumper can earn), while Nika clinched her third-straight on the Two Nights Tour. She has led every edition of the tour since its inception during the 2023-24 season. Their older brother, Peter, aided in Slovenia’s gold-medal effort in the mixed relay in Beijing.

Ryoyu Kobayashi made history at the 2022 Games when he won gold in the men’s individual normal hill, snapping Japan’s 50-year gold medal drought in the event and winning the country’s first individual ski jumping gold in any event since 1998. Since then, he has remained a fierce contender in the sport, landing in the top five of every World Cup circuit except the 2024-25 season. During the 2023-24 campaign, he won his third Four Hills Tournament.

Japan’s Sara Takanashi, who stands as one of the sport’s most successful women to date, is ranked 10th on the women’s World Cup this season. Nozomi Maruyama sits in 2nd behind Nika Prevc.

In this history of Olympic ski jumping, Austria’s success has been sporadic. However, the country has soared to the top in recent years behind Olympic veterans Stefan Kraft (one of the sport’s most decorated jumpers) and Jan Hoerl, as well as the younger Daniel Tschofenig and Stephan Embacher. The former two aided in Austria’s gold-winning effort in the team event in Beijing. Tschofenig, 23, took last year’s Four Hills title as the first jumper born in the 21st century to win the tournament, while Hoerl and Embacher, 20, placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in this year’s competition.
