What to know about ski mountaineering at the 2026 Winter Olympics

Ski mountaineering makes its Winter Olympic debut in Milan Cortina with the speed and mixed relay events. In “SkiMo,” athletes must rely on their proficiencies in cross-country skiing, Alpine skiing and climbing as they race at the same time on a set course, vying to be first to the finish.

The men’s and women’s sprint consists of one ascent on skis, one on-foot section and one downhill skiing section. Races typically take three-four minutes.

The mixed relay features two-person teams (one man, one woman) with a course that contains two ascents and two descents. A team member completes a loop, then tags their partner who completes a loop of their own, and that cadence is repeated once more for a total of four loops. These events are longer, around 30-35 minutes.

The U.S. did not qualify for the sprint, but will be competing in the mixed relay thanks to heroics from Cam Smith and Anna Gibson. At the last possible opportunity, the duo qualified with a historic win at the ISMF World Cup event in Solitude, Utah in December.

The triumph represented the first time in the Cup’s history that Americans emerged victorious, and also the first Cup event that Gibson ever competed in as a relative newbie to the sport. The duo’s unlikely story continues on the world stage at the Stelvio Ski Centre in Bormio where they’ll be underdogs once again.

France, led by Emily Harrop, along with Italy, Spain and Switzerland are the SkiMo powerhouses to keep an eye on in both events in Milan Cortina.
