How do the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials work?

The 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials is the only event at which American swimmers can qualify for the pool events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The schedule and order of events largely mimics that of the Olympics, with every individual Olympic event taking place (apart from relays, which are not contested at Trials).

For most events, only the swimmers that finish first and second in the final will qualify for Paris as members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team. The exceptions are the men's and women's 100m and 200m freestyle events, in which the athletes that finish 3rd-6th can become eligible for selection as relay-only swimmers for the men's and women's 4x100m and 4x200m relays, respectively.

In total, there are 72 spots at the Paris Games up for grabs, though many athletes will qualify for more than one event and therefore occupy multiple spots.

Athletes to watch at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials

Hundreds of swimmers will enter the pool at Lucas Oil Stadium in hopes of making it to Paris, though the majority of eyes will be on a handful of stars aiming to further their legacies this summer. While Katie Ledecky is a virtual lock to qualify in her signature events, the 800m and 1500m freestyles, she'll face stiff competition to make the team in the 200m and 400m freestyle events.

After dominating at the Tokyo Olympics, Caeleb Dressel stepped away from swimming for almost a full year in 2022 and has worked to regain his top form ever since. Trials will likely reveal just how much of a podium factor Dressel projects to be in Paris. Two-time gold medalist Simone Manuel is also on the comeback trail after battling overtraining syndrome following the Tokyo Olympics.

Katie Grimes, who, along with Mariah Denigan and Ivan Puskovitch, is already qualified for Paris in open water swimming, will attempt to secure her spot in the pool in Paris to go along with her spot in the Seine.

Kate Douglass, Regan Smith, and Jack Alexy headline the crowded field of young stars looking to make lots of noise in Indianapolis. And of course, Trials always produce some surprises, instantly catapulting unfamiliar names to the top of the Olympic conversation.

Who are the commentators for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials?

Play-by-play announcers Dan Hicks and Jason Knapp will be joined in the commentary booth by analysts Rowdy Gaines and Elizabeth Beisel, with a combined five Olympic swimming medals between them. Melissa Stark will provide reporting and athlete interviews from poolside.
