Kaillie Humphries and brake woman Jasmine Jones emerged victorious in the IBSF World Cup two-woman race in St. Moritz-Celerina, beating out a highly-competitive field that saw all three podium finishers separated just by three hundredths of a second.
The victory is Humphries’ second of the season after she won the two-woman event in Sigulda, Latvia, and another sign of the strong form the four-time Olympic medalist has found in recent weeks. Humphries and Jones were strong across both heats, finishing second fastest on the first run and third fastest on the second for a total time of 2:18.40.
Switzerland’s Melanie Hasler soared into second place alongside Nadja Pasternack, just one hundredth of a second behind Humphries, to secure her second silver medal of the weekend. The Swiss duo were neck and neck with Humphries and Jones throughout the race, with the smallest of margins separating the two pairs.
Defending two-woman world champion, Laura Nolte, returned to the podium in third place, after having missed out on the top three for the first time this season during the monobob event. Nolte got off to a slow start alongside partner Leonie Kluwig, dropping to 6th in the first heat. However, the pair put together the fastest run of the day by 0.17 seconds in the second phase, clawing their way back into contention.
Rounding out the top five were two other German groups: Kim Kalicki and Talea Prepens took 4th (+0.23), while Lisa Buckwitz and Kira Lipperheide finished 5th (+0.44).
The U.S. team also enjoyed a strong showing across the board, with all-three sleds finishing inside the top 10. Kaysha Love and Emily Renna mounted a second heat comeback to finish in 8th (+0.77) after falling to 11th in the first run. Meanwhile, Elana Meyers Taylor continued to put up consistent results, placing 10th alongside Jadin O’Brien.
In the men’s competition, Germany continued to be the team to beat, taking first and second place in the 4-man event. Team Ammour (featuring brothers Adam Ammour and Issam Ammour alongside Joshua Tasche and Alexander Schaller) grabbed its first win of the season with a total time of 2:09.51 following a pair of strong runs. Pilot Adam currently sits third in the IBSF 4-man World Cup standings standings.
Johannes Lochner (GER) followed up his 2-man victory by piloting his sled into second place with teammates Thorsten Margis, Jorn Wenzel and Georg Fleischhauer, just seven hundredths of a second off the win. The result keeps Lochner at the top of the World Cup standings in the 4-man competition, a position he also enjoys in the 2-man rankings.
The Swiss team led by Michael Vogt took the last step on the podium, finishing 0.55 seconds behind first. Joined by Dominik Hufschmid, Andreas Haas and Amadou David Ndiaye, Vogt’s team put together a pair of impressive runs, moving up from their 5th-place standing after the first run into third. It is another strong performance for Vogt, who steadily has climbed through the 4-man rankings after beginning the season with a 9th and 12th-place finish. He currently sits 6th overall.
Frank del Duca piloted the only U.S. sled to complete the 4-man event, securing a 16th- place result with Joshua Williamson, Boone Niederhofer and Dylan Gilbert. The group put together a strong run in the first heat, finishing 10th, but stumbled in run two and dropped back in the standings. The American sled piloted by Kristopher Horn was disqualified from the competition.
With the action wrapped in St. Moritz-Celerina, the IBSF World Cup will return in Altenberg, Germany. Competition will begin with the women’s skeleton race on Friday, January 16.
