Olympic dream over for Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe’s hopes of playing at the 2024 Paris Olympics can now be considered over.

Following the announcement of head coach and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry’s preliminary Olympic squad for France, a notable exclusion from the list was that of Mbappe.

The 25-year-old World Cup winner has reportedly agreed to sign for Real Madrid after becoming a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, and Henry claimed Mbappe's new club will not allow him to compete at the Games.

“Real Madrid were really straightforward about the Olympics,” Henry said during a news conference. “That last time I received so many rejections was at the university. There have not even been negotiations. You go, you ask, they say no and you leave.”

Back in March, while he was still under contract with PSG, Mbappe expressed his desire to play at an Olympic Games hosted in his hometown. But if he were to miss out due to the men’s Olympic soccer tournament not being an official FIFA event and teams not obliged to let their players compete at the Games, he said would have been OK with that decision as well.

France still bringing firepower to Olympics

Even with the exclusion of Mbappe, France’s 25-man roster is packed with talent.

Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta, the stars of the recent Premier League season, and PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Warren Zaire-Emery are a few names that headline the team. Henry decided to only call up two overaged players in Mateta and former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette, who now plays for Olympique Lyonnais. And if Henry wants to call up another overage player, he will only have room for one more.

Henry will need to cut his preliminary squad down to 18 by July 3 to comply with the roster size rule at the Paris Olympics.
