The U.S. lost to Italy in the final game of round-robin play on Monday, which means the two teams will meet up again this afternoon in the semifinals.
Monday's match was ultimately changed in the fifth end. The U.S. was actually sitting two stones in front of three Italian rocks when each side had two rocks left to throw. Korey Dropkin threw a guard on the American's penultimate throw, and it looked to be effective as Amos Mosaner's ensuing throw hit that rock and sailed into the back of the house, looking like a major mistake by the Italians. The Americans opted to throw a guard on their final rock instead of coming into the house for another counter, and Stefania Constantini capitalized. On Italy's hammer throw, she came up with a double-takeout of the U.S.'s two sitting stones, turning what could have been a stolen end for the Americans into four points for Team Italy and a 6-2 lead.
“We were kind of just weighing out the options,” Dropkin said of the decision to play a guard. “Obviously, that angle run was the toughest shot for them, so we decided to leave that for them instead of giving them potentially the shot in the middle. Stefania did what she does and what she’s capable of. They made a beauty of a shot. Hats of to them. We’ll make sure not to leave that next time.”
Team USA worked its way back, responding with two in the sixth and a steal of two more in the seventh after Constantini's draw shot attempt on the hammer floated past the button and two U.S. stones.
With the score tied 6-6 in the final end, Italy kept the house clean, and Constantini needed just one final takeout on the hammer for the single point and the victory.
After going back-and-forth in the first half, the two teams went into the break tied, 2-2.
“It was a great game for both teams. It was very back and forth,” said Team USA's Cory Thiesse. “She made a fantastic shot for four in the one end and we battled our way back, so not sweating that one too much. We have a lot of great takeaways to take into tonight’s game and we get another crack at it.”
The Italians finished the game with 12 takeouts to just nine for Team USA. Thiesse and Dropkin outshot Italy, 83-78 percent.
With the win, Italy, the defending Olympic gold medalists, clinches the No. 2 seed in the semifinals. Team USA drops to No. 3, setting up a rematch between the two teams later in the day. The mixed doubles curling semifinals will kick off at noon with two games.
“I think we're just continuing to focus on ourselves,” Thiesse said. “We had a great grasp on the ice and draw weight. Lots of great takeaways. We’re just kind of focusing on ourselves and playing with a lot of confidence and doing what we do great as a team.”
In the other semifinal, No. 1 Great Britain will take on No. 4 Sweden.
The other three games of the session were all between teams that had already been eliminated from semifinal contention. Here's a look at the final games in Cortina for those six squads.
