The final day of Stage 4 of the IBU World Cup in Oberhof, Germany brought out sunny skies and spectacular finishes. The men's 4x7.5km relay and the women's 10km pursuit gave spectators a worthwhile finale to an emotional three days of events.
The men's relay kicked off the closing day of competition and was packed with numerous lead changes after another tough day from the shooting range.
Five teams were within seconds of each other during the final lap and it was an all-out sprint for first in a dramatic finish.
Isak Leknes Frey, Johannes Dale-Skjevdal, Martin Uldal and Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen of Norway won the relay in 1 hour, 20 minutes and 29.1 seconds. The relay win was the team's third of the season, but this victory particularly seemed meaningful after the recent loss of their beloved teammate Sivert Guttorm Bakken.
"It was the most exciting relay for years. Extra special for us regarding the circumstances we are in. Today I had some extra energy, the last couple days have been tough, it totally drained all of the energy out of my body, I'm slowly getting back, and we won for our fifth guy today," Christiansen said after the race.
The Norwegians crossed the finish line just 2.6 seconds ahead of the French team comprised of Fabien Claude, Emilien Jacquelin, Quentin Fillon Maillet and Eric Perrot.
The Frenchman edged out the Swedish relay team just by 1.2 seconds to earn silver.
Jesper Nelin, Malte Stefansson, Martin Ponsiluoma and Sebastian Samuelsson of Sweden claimed the final spot on the podium.
Team USA finished seventh in the men's relay.
In the women's 10km pursuit, it was a sister kind of Sunday for Sweden.
Elvira Oeberg dominated the pursuit field and won gold in 31 minutes and 38.5 seconds just with one penalty on the day. The victory was the Swedish biathlete's second win in a row, after she topped the podium in the women's 7.5km sprint.
"It's very special to race like this, to be in the front all the time. Super happy that I managed to hit all of them in the standing," Oeberg said after the win.
Finland's Suvi Minkkinen crossed the line 16.6 seconds behind the Swedish winner to earn silver.
Hanna Oeberg, Elvira's sister and teammate, clinched the final podium spot after she edged out France's Julia Simon and finished the pursuit 1 minute and 4.5 seconds behind her winning sister.
"It was really nice to be able to celebrate with her. I knew if she was in the fight for a podium, she's very hard to beat," Elvira said of her sister Hanna, after they shared the podium in the pursuit.
The IBU World Cup next moves to Ruhpolding, Germany on Jan. 14 and begins with the women's 4x6 km relay competition.
