Team USA
USA (Ross/Klineman) def. NED (Keizer/Meppelink)
It wasn't exactly a clean victory, but Team USA's second-seeded beach volleyball team of April Ross and Alix Klineman defeated Dutch duo Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink in a rain-soaked three-setter, 20-22, 21-17, 15-5. Perhaps thrown off by the weather, Ross and Klineman found their groove only toward the end of the second set -- then won the final set by a ten-point margin. The Americans had previously qualified for for the knockout rounds following two preliminary wins.
QAT (Cherif/Ahmed) def. USA (Gibb/Bourne)
Qatar's world No.1 Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan topped Pool C without dropping a set after beating Americans Jacob Gibb and Tri Bourne 21-18, 21-17 in the final match of the day. The U.S. duo also advanced after finishing in second place in the pool.
International Men's matches
SUI (Heidrich/Gerson) def. ITA (Carambula/Rossi)
The Swiss pairing of Adrien Heidrich and Mirco Gerson have advanced to the lucky loser round -- but their third match opponents, Italy's Adrian Ignacio Carambula Raurich and Enrico Rossi, didn't make it easy.
Heidrich and Gerson won the first set with points to spare. But in a furious effort to avoid Olympic elimination, Carambula and Rossi matched the Swiss team point-for-point in the second set and wound up on top. The decider was just as close, with Switzerland squeaking past for a win: 21-14, 24-26, 15-13. The match lasted just over an hour.

ITA (Nicolai/Lupo) def. POL (Kantor/Losiak)
While one Italian duo finished winless and outside even the lucky losers bracket, the other fended off a stiff Polish charge to claim Pool F's top spot.
Italy's Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai won 21-10, 17-21, 15-10 over Poland's Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor, who will not know its status for the knockout rounds until Germany and Japan meet on Saturday.

CHI (Grimalt/Grimalt) def. MAR (Abicha/El Graoui)
Chile's Marco Grimalt and Esteban Grimalt were efficient in taking care of Morocco's Mohamed Abicha and Zouhair El Graoui.
The straight-sets win of 21-14 and 21-12 saw the Grimalts only trail twice: 1-0 and 2-1 to start the second set. That's enough to deliver a lucky losers bracket place for Chile, as Morocco's pair finishes 0-3.

BRA (Evandro/Bruno) def. POL (Bryl/Fijalek)
Brazil's Rio 2016 gold medalist Bruno Schmidt and partner Evandro Junior trailed by a set for the first time in Tokyo before bouncing back to defeat Poland's Michal Bryl and Grzegorz Fijalek 19-21, 21-14, 17-15. The Brazilian pair topped Pool E, while Polish duo finished second.
International Women's Matches
A near-perfect tournament for the Russian Olympic Committee's Nadezda Makroguzova and Svetlana Kholomina continued with a 21-8, 15-21, 15-12 win over Pool E runner-up Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy of Australia.
The ROC duo had four aces in the win, which gives them a Round of 16 place against a pair who finished second in pool play.
CUB Lidy/Leila def. ITA (Menegatti/Orsi Toth)
Cuba's pair of Leila Martinez and Lidiannis Echevarria defeated Italy’s Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth in straight sets 21-16, 21-16.
