USA (Ross/Klineman) def. NED (Keizer/Meppelink)
It wasn't exactly a clean victory, but Team USA's second-seeded beach volleyball team of April Ross and Alix Klineman defeated Dutch duo Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink in a rain-soaked three-setter, 20-22, 21-17, 15-5. Perhaps thrown off by the weather, Ross and Klineman found their groove only toward the end of the second set -- then won the final set by a ten-point margin. The Americans had previously qualified for for the knockout rounds following two preliminary wins.
QAT (Cherif/Ahmed) def. USA (Gibb/Bourne)
Qatar's world No.1 Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan topped Pool C without dropping a set after beating Americans Jacob Gibb and Tri Bourne 21-18, 21-17 in the final match of the day. The U.S. duo also advanced after finishing in second place in the pool.

The Swiss pairing of Adrien Heidrich and Mirco Gerson have advanced to the lucky loser round -- but their third match opponents, Italy's Adrian Ignacio Carambula Raurich and Enrico Rossi, didn't make it easy.
Heidrich and Gerson won the first set with points to spare. But in a furious effort to avoid Olympic elimination, Carambula and Rossi matched the Swiss team point-for-point in the second set and wound up on top. The decider was just as close, with Switzerland squeaking past for a win: 21-14, 24-26, 15-13. The match lasted just over an hour.
ITA (Nicolai/Lupo) def. POL (Kantor/Losiak)
While one Italian duo finished winless and outside even the lucky losers bracket, the other fended off a stiff Polish charge to claim Pool F's top spot.
Italy's Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai won 21-10, 17-21, 15-10 over Poland's Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor, who will not know its status for the knockout rounds until Germany and Japan meet on Saturday.
CHI (Grimalt/Grimalt) def. MAR (Abicha/El Graoui)
Chile's Marco Grimalt and Esteban Grimalt were efficient in taking care of Morocco's Mohamed Abicha and Zouhair El Graoui.
The straight-sets win of 21-14 and 21-12 saw the Grimalts only trail twice: 1-0 and 2-1 to start the second set. That's enough to deliver a lucky losers bracket place for Chile, as Morocco's pair finishes 0-3.

Brazil's Rio 2016 gold medalist Bruno Schmidt and partner Evandro Junior trailed by a set for the first time in Tokyo before bouncing back to defeat Poland's Michal Bryl and Grzegorz Fijalek 19-21, 21-14, 17-15. The Brazilian pair topped Pool E, while Polish duo finished second.

The ROC duo had four aces in the win, which gives them a Round of 16 place against a pair who finished second in pool play.
CUB Lidy/Leila def. ITA (Menegatti/Orsi Toth)
