Australia and Belgium finished atop Pool A and Pool B as group play wound up in men's field hockey on Friday.

The quarterfinals, all on Sunday: Australia vs. Netherlands, Germany vs. Argentina, India vs. Great Britain, and Belgium vs. Spain

German women stay unbeaten

Germany didn't need to crush South Africa to qualify for the quarterfinals, but their decisive 4-1 victory only solidifies their potential as medal contenders.

The Netherlands and Germany, each unbeaten, will play each other for first place in the last game for both teams in Group A. In 2016, the Netherlands won silver and Germany took bronze. Should they both advance far enough these Games, the countries will meet again either in the gold or bronze medal match.  

India women leave it late versus pesky Ireland

Navneet Kaur scored with three minutes left to put a marker on the scoreboard in a cagey scrap between India and Ireland in women's field hockey pool play on Friday.

India took a lot more shots but needed the late breakthrough to get its first win in Group A. The team will need to beat winless South Africa to improve its knockout round hopes, while Ireland will have a tougher and just as necessary task with regional rivals Great Britain. The two teams are tied for fourth in the group behind Great Britain (2-2) and unbeaten leaders Germany and the Netherlands.

Veteran leader strikes late to grab draw for Spain's men

Thirty-seven year old Pau Quemada has been around a while, but the significance of his late goal in Spain's 1-1 draw with Argentina will still capture his imagination.

Quemada's penalty corner goal helped Spain (1-1-2) clinch fourth place in Group A and a quarterfinal berth.

Canada's men deny South Africa

Already-eliminated Canada wouldn't go away, denying South Africa a pIace in the knockout rounds with a dramatic 4-4 draw.

Canada's men came back from 2-0, 3-2, and 4-3 deficits to get a result in the finale, the last goal from Gabriel Ho-Garcia coming with a minute Ieft and just a minute after South Africa had pushed ahead with what seemed to be a thrilling late winner.

Nqobile Ntuli and Nicholas Spooner scored first-quarter goals to stake South Africa to a 2-0 lead, but Canada scored in each of the match's first three quarters to set up an intense final frame.

Unbeaten Belgium wraps group play with draw

Already secure in first place in Group B, Belgium finished group play by twice rallying from a one-goal deficit to tie Great Britain 2-2. Great Britain took third in the group at 2-1-2.

Argentina vaults into men's playoffs

Argentina scored a goal in each quarter to take a 4-1 win over New Zealand, moving into third place in Group A and eliminating the Kiwis, who were stuck in fifth place. Four different players scored for the winners.

Germany gets past Netherlands

Germany improved its playoff seeding in the men's tournament, taking second place in Pool B with a 3-2 record after outscoring the Netherlands 3-1. The Dutch team didn't score until the final minutes, already down 3-0, and finished fourth in the group.

India knocks five past Japan

India coasted into the quarterfinals with the second seed from Group A by shaking off an early challenge from winless Japan and taking a 5-3 win behind two goals by Gurjant Singh

Kota Watanabe scored to tie the game in the third minute of the second half, but Shamser Singh answered in the 34th and India scored twice more in the fourth quarter before Japan finished with a consolation goal.
