South Korea and Canada denied the Dutch a fifth- or sixth-straight short track gold in Milan Wednesday, topping the podium in the women's 3000m and the men's 500m, respectively.
Women's 3000m relay
🥇 South Korea
🥈 Italy
🥉 Canada
Choi Min-Jeong, Kim Gil-Li, Shim Suk-Hee, and No Do-Hee powered South Korea to gold in the women's 3000m relay, claiming the country's seventh title in the event's 10 Olympic contests.
South Korea, traditionally a short track juggernaut, placed 2nd at the 2022 Beijing Games. The win marked the country's first short track gold in Milan.
Italy skated to silver behind Arianna Fontana for its second relay medal of the 2026 Games. With her 14th-career Olympic medal, Fontana surpasses Italian fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti as Italy's most prolific Olympian, Winter or Summer, and ties former Norwegian biathlete Ole Einar Bjorndalen as the second-most decorated Winter Olympian, second only to Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjorgen (15). Fontana could tie Bjorgen's record in the 1500m Friday.
Canada earned bronze, marking the third time the country has made the podium in Milan.
The Dutch team crashed out of the race and finished 4th.
Americans Kristen Santos-Griswold, Corinne Stoddard, Julie Letai, and Eunice Lee were penalized for an illegal late pass by Lee in the back half of the B Final.
Men's 500m
🥇 Steven Dubois (Canada)
🥈 Melle van 't Wout (Netherlands)
🥉 Jens van 't Wout (Netherlands)
Steven Dubois skated to a commanding win in the men's 500m final, winning his first-career individual Olympic gold medal and claiming Canada's first win in the event since 2010.
Teammate William Dandjinou made a faulty pass midway through the race, opening up the field for Dubois to slip into the lead. Dandjinou, who entered the 2026 Games the favorite in all three of the individual men's events, was penalized for the move and eliminated. His tenure in Milan ends without an individual medal, though he earned silver in the mixed relay. He'll go for a second relay medal when the Canadian men take on the 5000m Friday.
Dubois, 28, took bronze in Beijing.
Dutch brothers Melle and Jens van 't Wout rounded out the podium, placing 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Their medals mark the Netherlands' first-ever in the event on the Olympic level.
Melle, who turned 26 Wednesday, missed two full competitive seasons due to an overuse injury in his knee which caused severe pain and required surgery. He returned to the World Tour this season.
Younger brother Jens has now made the podium in each of the three individual men's races in Milan, skating to gold in the 1000m and 1500m.
With six total medals so far, the Dutch lead the medal count in Milan. This is the most successful Olympics for the Netherlands's short track program, which had not made an Olympic podium in any event until the 2018 Games.
Beijing Olympic champion Liu Shaoang, who switched allegiances from Hungary to China in 2022, battled up from 4th place to 1st in the B Final.
American Andrew Heo, who this season became the first American man to win a top-level short track race since 2011, slipped twice and dropped to last place in his quarterfinal.
