Skeleton entered a new era of competition with the Olympic debut of the mixed team event at Milan Cortina 2026. With the addition of the new discipline, athletes for first time would have the opportunity to win multiple skeleton medals at a single Olympic Games. That opened the door for Matt Weston to make his own name as a star of the sport and a star for Great Britain.

Here's how things went down in skeleton at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games...

Men's Skeleton: Weston's speed unmatched in maiden gold medal win

Though Weston finished in 15th at his debut Games in 2022, he came to Milan Cortina as both the reigning world champion and World Cup No. 1 — and the undisputed favorite for gold.

He made it look easy, gliding to the top on each run, with four track records to boot, and winning gold with a 0.88-second cushion. That made him his nation's first male gold medalist in skeleton, and he joined Olympic great Lizzy Yarnold as the only Brits to win an Olympic medal in the sport. At the time of competition, it was both Great Britain's first gold and first medal altogether at the 2026 Games.

Germany's Axel Jungk won a repeat silver, while 2022 gold medalist Christopher Grotheer took home bronze.

Americans Austin Florian and Dan Barefoot each made their Olympic debuts and finished 12th and 20th, respectively.

Women's Skeleton: At 36, Flock's first-ever Olympic medal is gold

🥇: Janine Flock (AUT), 3:49.02
🥈: Susanne Kreher (GER), 3:49.32
🥉: Jacqueline Pfeifer (GER), 3:49.46

Janine Flock displayed the power of persistence with her gold medal win at Cortina Sliding Centre in the women's event. At 36 years old, Flock entered her fourth Olympic Games still in search of her first medal. At PyeongChang 2018, she led the competition after three runs but ended in 4th place — 0.02 seconds out of medal position.

This time, she never relinquished her lead and went home with Austria's first women's skeleton Olympic medal.

It was another German 2-3 finish, with Susanne Kreher earning silver at her Olympic debut and Jacqueline Pfeifer claiming her second Olympic medal —  her first since she won silver at PyeongChang 2018.

American Kelly Curtis finished 12th at her second Games, while teammate Mystique Ro finished 15th in her Olympic debut.

Mixed Team Event: Team GB wins inaugural competition

🥇: Tabitha Stoecker / Matt Weston (GBR), 1:59.36
🥈: Susanne Kreher / Axel Jungk (GER), 1:59.53
🥉: Jacqueline Pfeifer / Christopher Grotheer (GER), 1:59.54

FULL EVENT REPLAY: Skeleton Mixed Team Event

The frontrunners in the inaugural mixed team skeleton event — which featured a female and male athlete from the same country setting back-to-back times — featured five athletes who had already won a medal at the 2026 Games. Great Britain's Tabitha Stoecker was the only one who hadn't, but that changed quickly when she and Weston anchored the event to take gold by 0.17 seconds.

The rest of the podium may have invoked some déjà vu. Germans Kreher and Jungk took silver after they each placed 2nd in their individual events. Fellow Germans Pfeifer and Grotheer added a second bronze to their Milan Cortina medal haul after they each earned individual bronze.
