After finishing just off the podium in the 5000m, three-time reigning world champion and home crowd favorite Davide Ghiotto will go for his first medal of the 2026 Games in Friday's race. In January 2035, Ghiotto shaved five seconds off the world record set by Swedish speed skating legend Nils van der Poel at the Beijing Olympics, becoming the first man to average sub-30-second laps for the entire 25-lap 10,000m.

In Beijing, Ghiotto skated to bronze in the event.

The race was contested just once on the World Cup level this season, at the third stop in Heerenveen, Netherlands. There, Ghiotto finished 2nd behind 19-year-old Metodej Jilek.

Jilek, from Czechia, began his meteoric rise to the top of the men's long distance field one year ago when he won the 5000m at world juniors in Feb. 2025. He then took bronze in 10,000m at the 2025 senior Worlds and climbed four World Cup podiums this season en route to his first World Cup season title.

Jilek took silver in the Olympic 5000m race Feb. 8. Norway's Sander Eitrem won the event in Olympic record time.

Though he specializes in the 5000m, owning a world title and the current world record in the event, he stands a chance in the longer race. He skated to 6th at the 2024 World Championships and improved to 5th the following year.

The same goes for France's Timothy Loubineaud, who broke the 5000m world record at the 2025-26 World Cup opener in November. Loubineaud took 7th in the 10,000m at 2025 World and rounded out the podium in Heerenveen.

Casey Dawson is the only American skating in the event. Though he is also stronger in the 5000m, the 25 year old has made significant strides in the longer distance over the last two years. In January 2025, he shaved almost 10 seconds off the 20-year-old mark held by Chad Hedrick — the last U.S. man to earn an Olympic medal in the 5000m (gold) or the 10,000m (bronze). In Heerenveen, he finished 6th out of 12 skaters.
