Overview

Rhythmic gymnastics at the Olympic Games features two events—individual all-around and group—where athletes perform choreographed routines set to music using apparatus such as the hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon

In the individual competition, gymnasts perform four routines in qualification, with the top 10 advancing to the all-around final, where medals are awarded based on combined scores. Performances are judged on difficulty, execution and artistry, with routines typically lasting between 75 and 90 seconds and requiring precise control of both body and apparatus.

Rhythmic gymnastics made its Olympic debut at the 1984 Summer Olympics with the individual all-around, while the group competition was added at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Since then, rhythmic gymnastics has grown into a highly technical and artistic sport, rooted in European traditions and formally recognized by the sport’s governing body in the early 1960s.
