GROUP A

IRAN DEF. VENEZUELA

The day's first competition saw Iran sweep Venezuela, 25 – 17, 25 – 20, 25 – 18. Iran looked good throughout the match, but especially when capitalizing on Venezuela’s many unforced errors. This marks Iran’s second preliminary victory in Tokyo, but a first round best-of-five win against Poland puts them in second place for Group A.

POLAND DEF. ITALY

Poland defeated Italy three sets to none, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20. Each team has now won and lost one match.

JAPAN DEF. CANADA

Japan defeated Canada in four sets for their second win, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23. They now stand at the top of Group A, just above Iran; the two will compete Wednesday at 8 PM ET.

GROUP B

RUSSIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE DEF. THE UNITED STATES

First up in Group B, the United States lost a tight match to the Russian Olympic Committee, 23-25, 25-27, 25-21, 23-25. While the ROC has won both its matches in Tokyo, the USA  is split 1-1, having previously defeated France in straight sets on Saturday.

FRANCE DEF. TUNISIA

France swept Tunisia 25-21, 25-11, 25-21. France is 1-1, while Tunisia is at the bottom of the rankings with two losses.

BRAZIL DEF. ARGENTINA

In perhaps the closest match of the night (and certainly the longest), reigning gold medalists Brazil came from two sets down to defeat Argentina 19-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21, 16-14. They are now ranked second, behind the ROC, in Group standings. Brazil and the ROC will compete early Thursday morning.
