Overview

Snowboarding is a relatively new addition to the Winter Paralympics, with snowboard cross debuting in 2014 and banked slalom being added in 2018.

Snowboard cross is similar to the traditional format on display at the Olympics, with riders completing timed runs by themselves during qualifying and then racing head-to-head during the elimination rounds.

In banked slalom, riders take multiple runs down a course with varied terrain and are ranked by their best times. There's also a version of this event — which has not appeared at the Paralympics yet — called dual banked slalom in which riders race head-to-head on adjacent courses.

There are three different classifications for men: one for athletes with upper-limb impairments, and two separate categories for athletes with lower-limb impairments. Women's para snowboarding will feature one classification for athletes with lower-limb impairments.

In July 2023, the International Paralympic Committee announced that the para snowboarding program for Milan Cortina will consist of two events with medals being awarded in each of the four classifications (three for men, one for women). At the time, a final decision had not yet been made about whether banked slalom or dual banked slalom will be featured as one of the two events alongside snowboard cross.
