Sofia Goggia (ITA) notched her first victory of the 2025-26 World Cup season at Val d'Isère in the French Alps (1:20.24). It was her 27th career Cup win — eighth in the super-G — and 65th podium.

Wearing the red bib, as the leader in the super-G standings, Alice Robinson (NZL) turned in another elite performance, securing second (+0.15). The Kiwi collected 80 more Cup points in what’s quickly turning into a breakout year for the 24-year-old, who now trails Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), the overall points leader, by just 74. Coming into Sunday, the deficit was more than double that. It was A-Rob’s fifth podium in her last eight races.

Rounding out the star-studded top three was Lindsey Vonn (USA). She found some déjà vu at the French Ski resort, finishing third for the second day in a row (+0.36). She heaped praise on her competition.

“Sofia and I bring out the best in each other, and that's what sports are about. Watching her run today, I know she's pushing it and that pushes me too.

“This is my first time on the podium with Alice, as well,” she continued. “My foundation sponsored her when she was 16, and I trained with her when I was unsure about the comeback in New Zealand. So that was really fun. Training super-G with her, maybe I shouldn't have given her so many tips [laughs], but she's skiing amazing.”

In her five races this season, Vonn has been a near podium lock. The 41-year-old’s “worst” result was fourth, and she currently holds the highest clip of podium finishes per Cup race of any Alpine skier this season at 80 percent. For context, Shiffrin is a shade above 44 percent.

Tallying her 142nd career podium, Vonn slid into fifth place on the overall Cup points leaderboard behind Shiffrin, Robinson, Goggia and Emma Aicher (GER).

With the victory, Goggia maintained her dominance in the speed disciplines this Cup season. All five of those starts have resulted in top-10 finishes, three were podiums efforts.

“Yesterday was really a tough day for me. Once I came back to the hotel, I cried for one hour,” an emotional Goggia reflected on her Saturday downhill performance. “I felt really a lot of pain inside of my soul and inside of my heart for the occasion that I threw away. As I always say [though], the mistakes or the missed chances are the gasoline for my future. I’m happy to win here today.”

The 33-year-old is in line to be one of Italy’s serious medal contenders in Milan Cortina. Her pedigree is undeniable, having won downhill gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games and earned downhill silver in Beijing in 2022. The Alpine field on the Italian women’s side is also currently thin.

Federica Brignone (ITA), a three-time Olympic medalist, two-time world champion, 37-time World Cup winner and last year’s overall Crystal Globe champ, has been out of action since April. During a giant slalom run at the Italian National Championships, she took a gnarly tumble and broke multiple bones in her left leg and tore her ACL. She was back on snow for a few training runs in November, but it remains unclear if she’ll be ready to go by Winter Games’ time in February.

Additionally, it was confirmed that Marta Bassino (ITA) will miss Milan Cortina due to a left leg fracture she sustained while training in the fall.

Bassino, Brignone and Goggia represent Italy’s big three, and as the lone member standing, Goggia is attempting to carry the weight of a nation on her back. So far, she is succeeding and received a bit of help from fellow countrywoman, Elena Curtoni (ITA) Sunday, who finished fourth (+0.73).

Meanwhile, the Americans had an uneven day. Two placed in the top 15 and three in the top 30 — half the output of yesterday’s six.

Keely Cashman (USA) claimed 11th, her best result of this Cup season and second best of her career. She came in 10th in Val d'Isère in 2020.

Tricia Mangan was the only other American to collect points, finishing tied for 24th, and Mary Bocock (USA) — who made her 2025-26 debut last week — got 33rd.

Two of the United States’ best speed skiers, Jacqueline Wiles and Breezy Johnson, placed 38th and 39th respectively.

The women return next weekend for more World Cup competition in Semmering, Austria where they will compete in a giant slalom on Saturday and slalom Sunday. Shiffrin and Paula Moltzan are expected to be in action. Both events will stream live on Peacock.
