Stefan Brennsteiner (AUT) captured his first career World Cup victory with an impressive pair of giant slalom runs at Copper Mountain.
Henrik Kristoffersen (NOR) secured second place (+0.95), his 96th career Cup podium, which is fifth all time.
Three-time Olympian Filip Zubcic (CRO) claimed third (+1.00).
A notable name missing from the podium was Marco Odermatt. The day after a triumphant super-G race that resulted in his 16th-career victory in the discipline, Odi proved he is indeed human, crashing during his first giant slalom run. Through the second intermediate, the "Swissblade" was on pace to post the fastest time of the 65-man field, steaming to a -0.21 advantage. As he attempted to turn right at a gate, he drifted too far on his inside ski, causing him to skid out. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
River Radamus, who grew up 30 minutes away from Copper Mountain, was the only American to qualify for a second run. He wound up placing 15th. Meanwhile, his fellow countrymen struggled. Isaiah Nelson (35), Patrick Kenney (37), Ryder Sarchett (38) and George Steffey (47) all finished outside the top 30, thus failing to claim any Cup points. Bridger Gile DNF’d.
After the first two giant slalom events of the season, Brennsteiner sits atop the discipline's table with 150 points. Odermatt slides down to fourth, although he still ranks first in overall, cross-discipline points (200).
On Saturday, Mikaela Shiffrin, Paula Moltzan and the world’s best hit the Copper Mountain slopes for a women’s giant slalom. Run 1 starts at 12:00 p.m. ET, followed by Run 2 at 3:00 p.m. ET, with both streaming on Outsideonline.com. That same GS action also will simulcast on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on NBC and Peacock.
