Olympic surfing athletes to watch on Team USA

Five Americans will hit the waves in Tahiti for the second iteration of Olympic surfing, with a mix of returners and rookies representing the U.S. on both sides of the event.

Headlining the men’s team is John John Florence, one of the most decorated surfers of the modern era. In surfing’s debut at the Olympics in Tokyo, Florence’s run ended in the third round at the hands of his American teammate Kolohe Andino. He’s in prime form heading into the Games, as he is currently ranked No. 1 in the World Surf League rankings. Joining him will be Griffin Colapinto, who will be making his first Olympic appearance. Colapinto is also set to be a strong contender, as he sits behind Florence at No. 2 in the WSL ranks.

On the women’s side, the U.S. will be sending over a trio compete in the swell at Teahupo’o. Carissa Moore and Caroline Marks will both be making their return to the Games, as they both represented the U.S. in Tokyo. Moore took home the first ever Olympic surfing gold medal while Marks narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in the competition. Caity Simmers will round out the U.S. surfing team. The 18-year-old will enter her first Olympics as the top ranked female surfer on the WSL tour this season.

It's safe to say the U.S. surfing team all have their sights set on the podium.
