Table tennis likely dates back to the late 1800s in Victorian England, when the wealthy created an indoor version of lawn tennis using items laying around the house to assemble a makeshift tennis court. The sport made its Olympic debut at the 1988 Seoul Games.
Historically, China has dominated the sport on the Olympic level, claiming 35 of 42 the gold medals awarded between 1988 and 2024 (including all five at the 2024 Paris Games).

Where will the table tennis competition be held at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?
Olympic table tennis will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, a multi-functional exhibition hall located in downtown Los Angeles. Traditionally, the venue hosts conferences, trade shows, concerts, sporting events, and more.
Table tennis players will compete in Hall 3, which will also host para table tennis during the 2028 Paralympics.
The facility is set to undergo a major renovation and expansion in order to properly accommodate the Games.
During the 1984 Summer Olympics, the convention center served as the main press headquarters.
