It was a historic day for the U.S. men's cross-country skiing team in Goms, Switzerland. Team USA took home the first-ever podium in the men's team sprint event in the final World Cup stage before the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher finished in 17 minutes and 46.51 seconds to secure third place in the men's team sprint.
Ogden and Schumacher both have won individual World Cup podiums in their careers, but this was the first team sprint podium for the skiers and for the U.S. men's team at large.
"We felt like we were strong in this event for a long time, and I think that's true. It was great to have a result that backs that up. Nothing went wrong, we skied well, and it felt good to be a strong part of that, especially securing the position in the last lap," Schumacher said after the win.
Norway I won the team sprint in 17:43.75 as Harald Oestberg Amundsen and Einar Hedegart dominated the field during the race.
The win was Hedegart's first sprint podium and win in his first time ever racing in the team event for Norway. In celebration, he saluted the cheering crowd as he crossed the line.
"It was my debut, we put some pressure and the other guys felt it," Hedegart said after the victory.
He added, "Message sent. I hope the message is received," when asked if there was a message to the Norwegian coaches ahead of choosing the squad for the team sprint for the upcoming Olympics.
Italy I took second on the podium and crossed the finish 1.94 seconds behind the winning Norwegian team.
Elia Barp and Federico Pellegrino showed they are more than ready for Olympic competition on home snow to begin in two weeks.
Team USA claimed the historic final podium spot for the men's program and for much of the last stretch it looked as though they may secure second.
Schumacher crossed the finish line on the heels of Pellegrino, just 0.82 seconds after the Italian. The two were neck and neck in the final sprint with Schumacher in a slight lead, but Pellegrino was able to overtake the American over the final strides of the race.
In the women's team sprint, it was all Norway and Germany down the final stretch of the race.
Germany I took the win in 20 minutes and 33.34 seconds after Laura Gimmler and Coletta Rydzek put together a well executed and incredibly timed race.
Rydzek exploded with incredible closing speed to steal the win out from under Norway's Julie Bjervig Drivenes in the last second.
"I'm happy that I had such a good finish, it's not as easy sometimes as it looks. It's always nice to be on top of the podium," Rydzek said after the race.
Rydzek added after the victory that she's feeling confident going into the Olympics.
Drivenes and Astrid Oeyre Slind of Norway 1 took the second spot on the podium and finished 0.52 seconds behind the German winners.
Karoline Groetting and Tiril Udnes Weng of Norway 2 claimed the final podium spot 0.2 seconds behind their compatriots.
Competition continues in Goms with the men's and women's sprint classic events.
