Overview
One of the oldest and more quintessential sports on the Olympic program, track and field (athletics) is the largest Olympic sport by both number of athletes and number of events. Athletes are split into two categories: track athletes, who race around the track in various events including sprints, long distance, hurdles and relay races, and field athletes, who test their athleticism through jumping events, pole vaulting, throwing and more.
The 2024 Paris Olympics was historic for track and field, with an equal numbers of gold medals available for men and women for the first time. Now, the Los Angeles Games will make history with the debut of a new event: the mixed gender 4x100 relay race, where the fastest men and women in the world will have another chance to claim a sprint crown for their countries.

Where will the track and field competition be held at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?
Track and field will primarily be held at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, located by the University of Southern California and home to the school's football team. A perennial city and Olympic landmark, the Coliseum was built in 1923 and has already played host to two Olympic Games (1932 and 1984). The Coliseum will be the first stadium in history to feature in a third Olympic Games, and will also host co-host the Olympic Opening Ceremony and will host both the Olympic and Paralympic closing ceremonies.
The men's and women's marathon will be the only events not contested in the Coliseum, and will instead be raced on the iconic Venice Beach Boardwalk.
